“To awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of the most pleasant sensations in the world.” – Freya Stark
A city break is the perfect way to celebrate a milestone, surprise a loved one, or spend time with close friends. Whether you fancy shopping in New York or a spa weekend in the UK, anything is possible. There’s always plenty to keep everyone occupied – why not combine your break with tickets to a sporting event, a theatre show, or afternoon tea for two.
If you’re travelling long haul, a city stopover can break your journey in the most wonderful way – Dubai, Singapore and Bangkok are all popular destinations. Another fantastic way to see the sights of several cities in one go is by luxurious cruise ship. Wherever you choose to travel, I am happy to recommend places to visit, eat, drink and shop. There’s a city break to satisfy the culture vulture in all of us. Take a look at these three suggestions for starters:
For a ‘best of both worlds’ break head to Barcelona, where you can soak up the cosmopolitan vibes one day and relax on the beach the next. Immerse yourself in Gaudi’s architecture, visit the famous Sagrada Familia, Picasso and Miro’s museums, and gorge on handmade chocolates, churros and local Catalan wines.
Just over 200 miles south west of Barcelona lies Valencia – a city that boasts an eclectic mix of arts, science, architecture, history and nature. With dozens of museums, shops galore and an abundant nightlife, Valencia knows exactly how to mix of old and new.
Lose yourself in this romantic floating city, perfect for exploring with a loved one. Take in the Renaissance and Gothic architecture on a boat cruise along the Grand Canal. Experience the bustle of Piazza San Marco, the stunning Doge’s Palace and Saint Marc’s Basilica. Have pizza and gelato in a hidden café, then cross the famous Rialto bridge for some shopping. When your feet can’t take anymore, relax in a gondola made for two!
Crowned the world’s most liveable city in 2018, Vienna is also one of the safest cities in Europe. It’s a place where palaces and parks combine to create the most spectacular backdrops and one of the greenest, most sustainable cities you’ll ever visit. Take a bike ride into one of the city’s 200 parks, stroll along the river Danube and take in the stunning views. Music plays a huge part in Viennese life so a visit to the opera is a must on this city
